Can adult coloring books really help relieve anxiety and stress?
Adult coloring books, traditionally a childhood pastime, have grown in popularity in recent years, for their benefits on mental health. While only a few years ago, we would not have taken it seriously, now it has become the norm. It have become a new & a favorite trend for adults of all ages.
But why
on earth would an adult or a senior need this childish kind of activity, you
ask?
Why adults are buying
colouring books?
Can coloring mandalas
reduce anxiety or stress?
Is coloring therapeutic
for adults?
Well, let
me tell you, they're mighty incredibly useful!
Do colouring books help with anxiety or stress?
Adult Colouring Book is good for your brain. It was seen as a great mindfulness tool to help you put life on hold and enjoy the moment.
But a few years ago, researchers found that this daily fun
activity may actually help reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety. So
this is by no means a way for all of us to waste time - it is a kind of creative
therapy and it offers real benefits.
Many studies have looked at the links between staining activity by adults and the relief of anxiety, anger, stress and depression.
And the answer is
unequivocally, yes!
Don’t
take our word for it. Here are a helpful view presented by experts.
For
instance, researchers at the University of Otago in New Zealand, conducted a scientific study (1) on the impact of coloring on mental health.
115 female University students were randomly assigned to a colouring intervention or to a logic puzzle control group. Participants took an inventory of psychological measures (depressive symptoms, stress, anxiety, growth, resilience, mindfulness) and then participated in a weeklong intervention on daily colouring or logic puzzles.
Following the intervention, the participants
again completed the inventory of psychological measures. Participants who
completed the colouring sessions showed significantly lower levels of
depressive symptoms and anxiety after the intervention, but control
participants did not.
the study
concludes that daily coloring activity can improve some negative
psychological outcomes and that it can provide an effective, inexpensive and
highly accessible self-help tool for non-clinical samples.
The
results thus point to its potential psychological benefits, which are
encouraging people to adopt it as a promising way to improve mental health.
Psychological benefits of coloring
Do you
know about the healing power of colors? it's about re-energise the mind &
clear brain fog, helping people to loosen up and clear their confusion.
So that therapeutic elements usely applied to keep children calm or entertained are now used by adults, to help distract themselves from the daily pressures of life.
In
addition, it is a pleasant activity. Indeed, with rare exceptions, EVERYONE
LOVES COLORING!
Relaxation
There are
three important elements that explain its relaxing effect: repetition, a
pattern and details. These elements elicit positive neurological responses in
both adults and children. we can easily predict what will gonna happen
gradually, this generates a calming impact.
Coloring
is more than beneficial for adults because it induces a de-stressing effect.
It requires focusing on the repetition and more particularly on the details, so
you can focus on the activity rather than your stressful worries.
This
activity relaxes the brain. When all thoughts are focused on a single, simple
activity this makes it easier for your brain to relax. the disturbance caused
by our own thoughts and evaluations tends to disappear. Awareness is
relieved from overthinking and our body and brain may find it rewarding.
Mindfulness
Mindfulness
is the key to lowering stress levels. Instead of worrying about past decisions
or future fears, mindfulness prompts us to focus on the present. People who
cultivate awareness and mindfulness in the present moment experience improved
mood also lower anxiety levels.
Thus,
focusing on coloring an image can trigger the substitution of negative thoughts
and reflections with pleasant, positive thoughts.
On the other hand, technology is so dominant in our daily life that we have to invest more in hobbies that force us to unplug. This is exactly what coloring can achieve!
For a period of time that you will only reserve for your own
relaxation, the attraction to technological devices is left behind as you
concentrate on this pleasant task in the present moment.
Art therapy
Coloring book can be a complement to
art therapy using art media, the creative process, and the resulting
artwork to explore their feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness,
manage behavior and addictions, develop social skills, improve reality
orientation, reduce anxiety, and increase self-esteem.
It brings
back our state of inner child where life was simple and without great
worries.
Another
study published in Art Therapy: Journal of the American Art Therapy Association
22 (2) pp. 81-85 argues that coloring mandalas or geometric patterns actually
helps reduce stress and anxiety levels.
Meditation
Coloring
can replicate some effects of meditation. The brain enters a relaxed state by
focusing on the present and blocking out the nonstop thinking we all
experience. As a result, the person reach a state of calm that relieves the
brain from the daily stresses of life.
Indeed,
the complexity and structure of the patterns and mandala designs help to drew
anxious people into a meditative-like state & to reduce their stress.
Self Esteem
Another aspect, not to be underestimated, of the success of coloring drawings is that they can be turned into real works of art. these works arouse pride and self esteem to the point of being exhibited at home or shared on social networks. and there is no skill level to acquire before being considered an expert.
If you are anxious and stressed out at the end of the day, just get out
your crayons, grab your coloring book and have fun!.
How is coloring good for elderly?
How neat
is that?
Curious
yet? Well then, read on.
Because
there are many books and recent researchs touting the benefits of coloring
- something kids have known for ages. This activity can help you channel your inner
artist, de-stress you, and bring a sense of peace. But is there
really a benefit for adults and for seniors? And what does this hobby do to our
brains to cause such pleasure and calm?
Not only
is colouring a calming therapeutic activity for adults, its benefits for
aging people can have numerous social and cognitive benefits.
Refocusing our attention
Adult
coloring requires modest attention focused outside of self-awareness. It's a
simple yet relaxing activity that takes us out of ourselves in the same way,
trimming the lawn, knitting, or taking a calm walk on Sunday.
remembering forgotten memories
The
simple act of coloring can bring back many memories to aging adults. These
memories of childhood, schooling or adulthood linked to creative activities
such as drawing, painting and even music or dance. These remembered memories
can have a valuable impact in inspiring and motivating aging seniors.
reviving concentration
Coloring
book can help deepen focus and improve attention span. Paying attention to the
staining of the interior lines, choosing the appropriate colors and patterns,
even choosing the strength to use of the pencil on the paper helps to direct
attention and center the mind.
maintaining motor skills
Motor
skills are an important asset to maintain for the elderly. Indeed, adult
coloring can improve eye and hand coordination when practiced often.
Unfortunately, motor skills fade with age, but colouring is a relaxing and
useful tool that can help strengthen these skills and rebuild basic motor
skills and trigger forgotten ones.
Improving mood and relieving depression
focusing
on colouring an image can make it easier to replace negative or unhealthy
thoughts and images with pleasant, positive thoughts.
Self-discovering
At
different ages, adults try to redefine who they are, what they like, what they
want to do. Their situations after retirement and with adult children can be difficult
to endure while dealing with mental and physical health issues that may
arise. Colouring pages can help seniors break out of the constant battle in
their minds over how to define themselves.
With so many therapeutic
benefits of coloring, it's about time every adult or senior could get their own
copies of adult coloring books!
It's worth it! doesn't it?
